School begins on Monday, August 30!  See you here on that special day!

Summer AP Assignments:
Over the summer, everyone needs to learn the material in Chapter 1, 3, 4, 5, 6.  We will save Ch 2 for September.  Follow the link at the bottom of the page to see how we are studying this in summer school.  Remember... there is a TEST on these five chapters on the first day of school.

Also, check out www.chemmybear.com/groves/apchem.html.  I have spent time this summer updating the list of handouts for the first chapters.  This is a great place to grab Practice Tests, FRQ's (Free Response Questions), and Nine-Station Reviews to help you get ready for the first day test.

NOTE:  Chapter 2 is NOT on the first day test.  It will be tested somewhere in the second week.

My Philospohy:
Chemistry is a challenging subject, but I believe that every student can succeed. My task is to provide support and learning opportunities for each student.
The student’s task is to take full advantage of these learning opportunities.

When Can My Child Get Help?
I am generally available during lunch and 7th period in Room 223. I am also available via email.

How Can I Help My Child Succeed?
Ask your child what he/she is learning in class? If someone can explain an idea, they understand it better. See that they have a scientific calculator ($12 variety), a good place to study, and a good time to study.
Internet access is useful because our daily schedule and study materials (including practice exams, answers to practice exams, online practice quizzes, etc.) are consistently posted on the high school web page.  More information for the class may be posted on http://www.chemmybear.com/groves/chempage.html (for General Chemistry) and http://www.chemmybear.com/groves/apchem.html (for AP Chemistry).
Students without internet access are welcome to use the computers in my classroom or in the school library.

How Can I Find Out How My Child Is Doing In Class?
Grades are posted online.  You can access them using the ABI (Aeries Browser Interface) once you have received your PIN number from Jack Smith, Assistant Principal.

Class Goals:
My goal is to have students see their own world a little differently by studying the world of science. Chemistry offers new things to see, but also new ways to think. I want students to go away, not necessarily as chemists, but as people with a richer and more appreciative view of the world.
On a more measurable level, I like to have a concrete goal for my classes.
In AP Chemistry, our goal is to learn enough chemistry to pass the AP Chemistry exam given in May.
In General Chemistry, our goal is to learn enough chemistry to score well on the STAR chemistry exam.

Support:
Thank you for your generous Wish Night donations. We have been able to buy an LCD projector, new models, software, color-changing periodic tables, magnetic ceiling hooks, and other useful pieces of equipment with the money.
If you have any old calculators you are not using, we can always use some in our “calculator box.” In chemistry, we most often require simple four-function calculators, although simple scientific calculators (with logs and exponents) are also useful.
